~ENG~In the second half of the fourth century, an unknown author created a correspondence between Seneca and Paul. This book contains a new German translation of these letters based on the current critical edition. Furthermore, two documents which are less well known but sometimes discussed in connection with these letters are presented.
English summary: In the second half of the fourth century, an unknown author created a correspondence between Seneca and Paul. The most striking characteristic of these fourteen brief letters is their lack of nearly any content. Their sole intention is to make Seneca a friend of Paul’s. In doing so, the author underlined the affinity between the pagan philosopher Seneca and the Latin Christian theologians of the fourth century, inventing an apostolic tradition. This book contains a new German translation of these letters based on the current critical edition along with an introduction, notes and testimonies. Furthermore, two documents which are less well known but sometimes discussed in connection with these letters are presented, translated into German for the first time and provided with commentaries: a fictitious letter from Mordechai to Alexander the Great from a version of the novelistic tradition of Alexander and a letter from Seneca about pride and idols which is, in fact, a Christian apology from the fifth century. In the essays, the authors deal with key issues involving Stoicism and Christianity, the conception of god and ethics. They also discuss the reception of Seneca in the Middle Ages and in early modern times. German description: In der zweiten Halfte des 4. Jahrhunderts erfand ein unbekannter Autor einen Briefwechsel zwischen Seneca und Paulus. Die vierzehn kurzen Briefe, acht vom Philosophen, sechs vom Apostel, sind in sehr schlechtem spatantikem Latein geschrieben und weitgehend inhaltslos. Ihr Ziel ist es, mittels eines Austauschs von freundschaftlichen Billetts, wie er unter den Intellektuellen der Spatantike ublich war, Seneca zum Freund des Paulus zu machen und so das hohe Ansehen Senecas in der spatantiken lateinischen Theologie apostolisch zu sanktionieren. Diese Fiktion war sehr erfolgreich und regte im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder zu Spekulationen uber das Verhaltnis zwischen Stoa und Christentum an. Dieser Band bietet eine neue Ubersetzung des Briefwechsels auf der Basis der neuesten kritischen Edition, versehen mit einer Einleitung, Erlauterungen und Testimonien. Ferner werden zwei wenig bekannte Texte aus dem Umfeld des Briefwechsels abgedruckt, erstmals ubersetzt und erlautert: ein angeblicher Brief des Mordechai an Alexander den Grossen aus einer Fassung des Alexanderromans und ein Brief Senecas uber Hochmut und Gotterbilder, eine christliche Apologie aus dem 5. Jahrhundert. Die Essays behandeln zentrale Probleme des Verhaltnisses zwischen Stoa und Christentum (Gottesbild und Ethik) sowie die Seneca-Rezeption vom Mittelalter bis in die fruhe Neuzeit.
