Die vielfaltigen Landschaften Vorderasiens, das Klima und das Wetter beeinflussten verschiedene Aspekte des menschlichen Lebens unmittelbarer, als das heute in unserer technisierten Welt geschieht. Fauna und Flora spielten eine grosse Rolle im Leben der Menschen; dies spiegelte sich in der Vorzeichenkunde, der Literatur und der Kunst wider. Der von Antonia Pohl und Michael P. Streck herausgegebene Sammelband vereint die Beitrage des 11. Internationalen Colloquiums der Deutschen Orientgesellschaft im Juni 2022, auf dem unterschiedliche Aspekte des Verhaltnisses der Menschen im Alten Orient zu ihrer Umwelt diskutiert wurden. Die ReferentInnen vertraten eine Vielzahl akademischer Disziplinen, darunter die Altorientalistik (Assyriologie und Hethitologie), Vorderasiatische Archaologie, Archaologie des Mittelmeerraums, Landschaftsarchaologie, Semitistik, Alttestamentliche Theologie/Biblische Archaologie, Archaobotanik sowie die Tieranatomie und die Geschichte der Tiermedizin.
