Sich für Menschenwürde und Menschenrechte zu engagieren bedeutet, sich gegen Unfreiheit, Ungerechtigkeit, Gewalt, Grausamkeit, Unterdrückung sowie Erniedrigung und Demütigung anderer einzusetzen. Die Überzeugung, dass alle Menschen Würde und Grundrechte haben, wurde nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg erstmals international proklamiert. Die Frage, was genau mit „Menschenwürde und -rechten“ gemeint ist, welche religiösen und philosophischen Schlussfolgerungen daraus zu ziehen sind und welche rechtlichen, politischen, kulturellen, sozialen oder gar wirtschaftlichen Konsequenzen sich daraus ergeben, wird heute mehr denn je kontrovers diskutiert. Evangelia G. Dafni und die Mitglieder des von ihr geleiteten Netzwerks „Menschenwürde und Menschenrechte in Altem Orient, Israel und Hellas“ gehen in die altorientalische, biblische und altgriechische Literatur- und Rechtsgeschichte vom 3. Jahrtausend v.Chr. bis zum 3. Jahrhundert n.Chr. zurück, um die Entwicklung und Rolle des Konzepts der Menschenwürde und Menschenrechte im mehrsprachigen und multikulturellen Umfeld Mesopotamiens, Kleinasiens, Syro-Palästinas und des griechischen Archipels zu untersuchen. <br /><br />Committing to human dignity and human rights means standing up against bondage, injustice, violence, cruelty, oppression and the degradation and humiliation of others. The belief that all people have dignity and fundamental rights was first proclaimed internationally after the Second World War. The question of what exactly is meant by “human dignity and rights”, what religious and philosophical conclusions can be drawn from it and what legal, political, cultural, social or even economic consequences arise from it is more controversial today than ever. Evangelia G. Dafni and the members of the network “Human Dignity and Human Rights in the Ancient Near East, Ancient Israel, and Hellas” delve into the ancient Near Eastern, biblical and ancient Greek literary and legal history from the IIIrd millennium BC to the 3rd century AD to examine the development and role of the concepts of human dignity and human rights in the multilingual and multicultural environment of Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, Syro-Palestine and the Greek archipelago.
