Bedingt durch die schwierige Situation in den Jahren nach dem 1. Weltkrieg waren viele osterreichische Kloster in zum Teil existenzbedrohende wirtschaftliche Schwierigkeiten geraten. Ein geeignetes Mittel zur Bewaltigung dieser Probleme schien der Verkauf von Kulturgut, darunter mittelalterliche Handschriften und Inkunabeln. Wertvolle Manuskripte wie die Admonter Riesenbibel oder das Antiphonar von St. Peter wechselten den Eigentumer; nicht wenige Bucher, wie etwa die Gutenbergbibel aus St. Paul im Lavanttal, verliessen Osterreich fur immer. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes untersuchen erstmals diese lange Zeit verdrangten Vorgange systematisch und quellenbasiert – unter Berucksichtigung der Handlungen aller Beteiligten, der Kloster selbst ebenso wie des Bundesdenkmalamtes, der Osterreichischen Nationalbibliothek, kirchlicher Stellen und nicht zuletzt der Handler und Sammler.
