Abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade nationalhistorischer Interpretationen behandelt Alexander Pyrges diesen uber kirchliche und herrschaftliche Grenzen hinweg wirkmachtigen Prozess. Im Zentrum steht das Kolonialprojekt Ebenezer: Im Jahr 1734 gegrundet wurde die Gemeinde Ebenezer in der britischen Kolonie Georgia jahrzehntelang durch anglikanische und lutherisch-pietistische Kirchenreformer in England und im Alten Reich gefordert. Der Fokus auf das Kolonialprojekt ermoglicht es, die Voraussetzungen fur landeskirchliche Expansion ebenso herauszuarbeiten wie die komplexen sozialen Vernetzungen und die kreativen religiosen Sinnstiftungen, welche diese Expansion auszeichneten. Die Untersuchung gibt so Aufschluss uber die religiose Verdichtung der nordatlantischen Welt im 18. Jahrhundert. Vor allem aber beleuchtet sie fluchtige und dauerhafte Veranderungen in den Formen und Mechanismen religioser Vergesellschaftung am Vorabend der globalen Ausbreitung des Protestantismus.
