This volume explores the early church interpretation of the Passion of John (John 18-19). The focus is on commentaries on the text from the three major areas of early church scriptural interpretation: Greek, Latin, and especially Syriac.The commentaries document their creative and productive interpretation of Scripture. Particular attention is paid to the anti-Jewish reception history of the text and the current theological debates.
Hans-Ulrich Weidemann, Andreas Hoffmann und Nestor Kavvadas erschliessen die altkirchliche Auslegung der Johannespassion (Joh 18-19). Im Fokus stehen die Kommentierungen des Textes aus den drei grossen Bereichen altkirchlicher Schriftauslegung: Fur die griechische Johannesexegese werden die Johanneskommentare von Origenes, Theodor von Mopsuestia, Johannes Chrysostomus und Cyrill von Alexandrien ausgewertet, ausserdem die aus Katenen rekonstruierten Fragmente z.B. von Apollinaris von Laodizea. Im lateinischen Bereich werden die Johannestraktate des Augustinus analysiert, die die westliche Johannesexegese uber Jahrhunderte pragten. Hinzu kommt die orientalische, v.a. syrische Johannesauslegung seit Ephraem, wie sie sich im Diatessaronkommentar und in spateren Kommentaren zum vierten Evangelium, aber auch in poetischen Gattungen niedergeschlagen hat.Die inhaltliche Auslegung der Johannespassion erschliessen die Autoren von den Methoden der Schriftauslegung her, die die antiken Autoren praktizierten. Die Kommentierungen dokumentieren ihre kreative und produktive Schriftauslegung: Sie orientiert sich am johanneischen Text, spiegelt aber zugleich den intellektuellen und spirituellen Reichtum antiker christlicher Theologie. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der antijudischen Rezeptionsgeschichte des Textes und den jeweils aktuellen theologischen Auseinandersetzungen.
