Ausgangspunkt der Darstellung ist das biblische Bild von Israel und seiner Geschichte in der hellenistischen Epoche (erstes und zweites Makkabaerbuch sowie das Danielbuch). Angesichts der theologischen Zielsetzung dieser biblischen Quellen hat die historische Rekonstruktion der Geschichte Israels in der hellenistischen Epoche in erster Linie das Schicksal Israels als Jahwevolk im Blick. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt der in proto- und deuterokanonische Schriften aufgeteilten biblischen Literatur der hellenistischen Epoche.
