After its beginnings in the Galilee, Christianity rapidly evolved into an urban religion. Thus, the ancient city in its various forms and conceptions forms the primary horizon of meaning for the development of the new faith within the Graeco-Roman world. German text.
Nach den galilaischen Anfangen ist das Christentum sehr bald zu einer stadtischen Religion geworden. Die antike Stadt in ihren verschiedenen Ausformungen und Konzeptionen bildet damit den primaren Sinnhorizont der Entwicklung des neuen Glaubens in der hellenistisch-romischen Welt. Bereits Jesus bewegt sich nach Lukas stets in Stadten. In der Apostelgeschichte finden wir stadtisches Leben, Mietsinseln und sogar Anleihen bei der antiken Reisefuhrerliteratur. Die paulinische Mission orientiert sich an den Metropolen und Hauptverkehrsadern des romischen Imperiums. Das Christentum erscheint geradezu fur die Stadt bestimmt und ist auf stadtischem Boden besonders erfolgreich. Konzeptionen der Stadt, beispielsweise der Baumetaphorik, fliessen schon bald in Christologie oder auch Ekklesiologie und Eschatologie ein.
