English summary: This book analyzes a collection of procedural documentation that reveals, in parallel with the Neapolitan trial against the ‘atheists,’ two similar events that were held in Rome in the second half of the seventeenth century. From this emerges a more complete picture of a story that deeply marked Italy. Italian description: I sommari conservati presso l’Archivio del Sant’Ufficio romano permettono di ricostruire la vasta trama di idee e relazioni sviluppatasi a Roma tra docenti della Sapienza, membri del Congresso medico, nobili e bibliotecari negli anni Ottanta del secolo XVII. L’analisi della documentazione processuale rivela che, parallelamente al processo napoletano contro gli “ateisti”, si svolsero a Roma due processi che coinvolsero persone ben piu rilevanti e numerose di quelle implicate a Napoli, giungendo a una conclusione assai piu drammatica e cruenta. Antonio Oliva, Pietro Gabrielli, Filippo Alfonsi, Paolo Boselli, Sulpizio Antonio Mazzuti, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, Gian Vincenzo Gravina e, dietro di loro, le famiglie dei Colonna e dei Mancini, furono i nomi piu significativi coinvolti in una vicenda che, sommata a quella napoletana, mise in allarme le congregazioni romane dell’Indice e del Sant’Ufficio. Emerge cosi una vicenda che segno profondamente l’Italia del tempo e che viene qui ricostruita partendo dalle principali esperienze del “complesso culturale” bianco-luminoso e proseguendo poi con i principali percorsi intrapresi dai sopravvissuti ai processi fino alle riforme dell’istruzione pubblica promosse a Roma e a Torino.
