Le titre de cet ouvrage, Dada – art et anti-art, parait contradictoire, mais c’est precisement le paradoxe qui est la caracteristique de ce mouvement. Comme deux volets d’un renouveau spirituel, destruction et construction font de Dada plus qu’un mouvement artistique. Les anciennes notions de l’art avaient ete videes de leur sens par les bouleversements de la Grande Guerre. C’est pour cela que Dada fut contre l’art de l’epoque. Dada n’est pas fonde, comme les mouvements precedents, sur un style formel determine, sur des principes et des methodes. Une liberte totale et l’utilisation de toute matiere pour le travail createur deviennent son principe fondamental. Des dechets et des objets trouves ouvrent soudain un monde de possibilites et de formes nouvelles.Comme membre actif, Hans Richter fit parti du mouvement Dada a Zurich de 1916 a 1920. Temoin lui-meme, il a pu reunir de nombreux temoignages qui lui ont permis de brosser un tableau vivant de ce mouvement si controverse, en evoquant les grands faits Dada, tels qu’ils se sont produits a Zurich, New York, Berlin, Paris et ailleurs.
