Die Stadt der Moderne, fur Amerika paradigmatisch New York, war nicht nur Schauplatz vielfaltiger gesellschaftlicher, poltischer und kunstlerischer Transformationsprozesse: Sie ist ambivalentes Symbol urbaner Modernitat. Das moderne Genre des Stadtromans setzt sich auf komplexe und kritische Weise mit dieser Stadt als realem Ort, als Erfahrungshintergrund und als Symbol auseinander und vermittelt mit realistischen wie experimentellen Erzahlstrategien die Vorstellung einer allgemeingultigen Grossstadterfahrung. Fur die Postmoderne allerdings ist das Postulat allgegenwartig, die Stadt “verschwinde aus dem Blick”, in realer wie in symbolischer Weise – und das, obwohl die Grossstadt zum dominanten Lebensort geworden ist. Die vorliegende Studie setzt sich mit diesem Paradox auseinander und zeigt, dass ‘Stadt’ – stellvertretend in New York-Literatur – auch heute allgegenwartig ist. Der Gegenwartsroman setzt sich auf verschiedenen Ebenen mit gattungsmassigen Vorgaben des Stadtromans auseinander und stellt dessen Anspruch auf “Uberblick”, auf ein Durchdringen der grossstadtischen Komplexitat und deren eindeutige Interpretation nachhaltig in Frage. Textanalysen von Romanen u.a. von Bret Easton Ellis, Siri Hustvedt, Colson Whitehead und Paul Auster zeigen, dass ein Blick von oben, den der erzahlerische Uberblick des klassischen Stadtromans voraussetzt, auf naturalisierten ideologischen Pramissen beruht, die nun hinterfragt werden. New York als Ort dieser Texte ist eine ConspiraCity, eine verschworerische Stadt, in der – im Negativen wie im Positiven – Ubersicht als Illusion erscheint.
