En 1953, Jeanne et Louis Robert firent la copie et l’estampage de plusieurs inscriptions sur le site de l’ancienne Chalketor, en Carie, region d’Asie Mineure qui occupa une place de choix dans l’oeuvre des deux savants. Les documents relatifs a trois de ces inscriptions, deposes dans le fonds Louis Robert de l’Academie, forment le coeur de cet ouvrage. En depit de leur faible longueur, ces inscriptions apportent des informations inedites sur l’histoire de Chalketor et de cette partie de la Carie. Ces donnees conduisent ainsi … examiner successivement la geographie historique de la region dans l’Antiquite, marquee par les rivalites entre Mylasa, Iasos et Euromos ainsi que par les dominations etrangeres, les limites du territoire d’Iasos, la fonction de l’empereur magistrat eponyme dans les cites d’Asie Mineure occidentale, ainsi que les derniers elements connus de l’histoire de Chalketor au cours du IIIe siecle ap. J.-C. Le sort de cette modeste localite carienne, saisi par fragments sur plus de sept siecles, permet ainsi d’eclairer des evenements de l’histoire regionale et de poursuivre la reflexion sur les evolutions politiques et sociales de l’Antiquite grecque et romaine.
