Leider entspringt es nicht uberangstlicher Phantasie, sondern ist nuchterne Realitat, dass durch methodische Fortschritte in Biologie, Technik und Medizin die Identitat des Menschen bedroht wird. Sie betrifft immer auch Menschenwurde und verbindet sich fur Christen eng mit Gottebenbildlichkeit. Mag man den Ersatz kranker menschlicher Organe des Stoffwechsels durch tierische, die Xenotransplantation, noch als etwas eher Formales betrachten, beruhrt die angestrebte Stammzelltherapie wesentliche inhaltliche Probleme. Das gilt sowohl fur ihr von vielen Wissenschaftlern favorisiertes Ausgangsmaterial, die embryonalen Stammzellen, als auch fur Einsatzgebiete wie das menschliche Zentralnervensystem. Entsprechend muss man die starker molekularbiologisch gepragten Bereiche der Gentherapie und einer Manipulation von Prozessen des Alterns einordnen. Etwas Besonderes stellen die Konvergierenden Technologien (Converging Technologies), eine Allianz aus Nano- Bio-, Informations- und Kognitionswissenschaften und -technologien (NBIC) dar. Sie empfehlen sich besonders gesunden Menschen zur Steigerung korperlicher und geistiger Fahigkeiten und sind mit weitgehenden Visionen sowie religiosen Anspruchen (Post- oder Transhumanismus) verbunden. Die Reaktion darauf ist ausserhalb der USA bisher gering. Die Beitrage dieses Bandes behandeln schwerpunktmassig Stammzellforschung und Converging Technologies und erfassen dabei die weite Spanne zwischen fachlicher Information und personlicher Wertung.
