Baum- und Strauchdarstellungen auf griechischen Vasen wurde bisher in der Literatur nur geringe oder keine Beachtung geschenkt. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt eine Auswahl von Vasenbildern vor, auf denen Gottern, Heroen, sowie anderen mythischen Gestalten und auch Sterblichen ein Baum oder ein Strauch zugesellt ist. Die Darstellungen beginnen zwischen 580 und 550, wohl, wie meist angenommen wird, beeinflusst von ostionischer Naturauffassung, zu sehen auf einer samischen Schale. Am haufigsten begegnen uns Baumdarstellungen auf attisch-schwarzfigurigen Vasen des spaten sechsten und des fruhen funften Jahrhunderts, zu einer Zeit, als sich bereits die rotfigurige Malweise mehr und mehr durchsetzte. Diese erschwerte jedoch die Wiedergabe von Baumen, da deren zahlreiche Blatter nun vom schwarzen Grund ausgespart werden mussten, so man nicht vorzog, sie mit einem, beim Brennen sich rot farbenden Schlicker aufzumalen. Die im Laufe des funften Jahrhunderts seltener anzutreffenden Darstellungen von Baumen und Strauchern sind jedoch eher darauf zuruckzufuhren, dass nun von den Malern andere Bildthemen bevorzugt wurden. Zu den spatesten Baum- und Strauchabbildungen gehoren jene des Meidias-Malers in ihrer bei diesem Kunstler zierlichen Form.
