Aux origines de l’église de Perse: les Actes de Mar Mari

Rediges en syriaque aux alentours du VIIe siecle en Babylonie, les Actes de Mar Mari rapportent l’histoire de l’evangelisation des contrees mesopotamiennes jusqu’au pays des Perses, domaine des souverains arsacides puis sassanides, vaste empire de l’Iran ancien. Cet apostolat est l’oeuvre de l’un des soixante-dix disciples du Christ du nom de Mari. Les Actes temoignent d’une relecture minutieuse des origines chretiennes realisee par l’Eglise syro-orientale, confrontee a cette epoque au proselytisme d’autres groupes religieux (baptistes, manicheens, marcionites). Des clefs d’interpretation permettent de decouvrir les intentions profondes de l’auteur qui laisse entrevoir en Mari la figure antithetique de Mani. Par ailleurs, ce texte permettait de justifier le positionnement du siege episcopal de Seleucie-Ctesiphon dans son independance et sa souverainete primatiales. L’evangelisateur Mar Mari, personnage fondateur, allait devenir, jusqu’a nos jours, la reference historique et liturgique pour les chretiens assyro-chaldeens.
