English summary: The present volume contains excerpts from the memoirs of the youth and early career of Karl Brugmann (1849-1919), professor of Indo-European linguistics at Leipzig University and one of the great figures in the history of that discipline. In 1876 Brugmann was able to substantiate the principle of the regularity of sound-change advocated by the Neogrammarians by demonstrating that the system of the Indo-European proto-language also included the syllabic nasals *m, *n (not preserved in any of the individual IE languages). This led to disputes with Curtius. Brugmann’s text describes his life up to his return from Lithuania in 1880 and thus also throws light on the period around 1876 as a critical phase in the history of linguistics. Footnotes offer ample information about individuals and facts mentioned in the text, and the volume is prefaced with an essay “Der ‘Junggrammatiker’ Karl Brugmann”. Ursprunglich Schuler von Georg Curtius, ist Brugmann unter dem Einfluss von August Leskien einer der fuhrenden Kopfe der sog. ‘Junggrammatiker’ geworden. Dies fuhrte 1876, als er den Nachweis fuhren konnte, dass die indogermanische Grundsprache auch silbische Nasale *m, *n besass (die in keiner der indogermanischen Einzelsprachen erhalten sind), und damit das von den Junggrammatikern vertretene Prinzip der Ausnahmslosigkeit der Lautgesetze erhartete, zu Auseinandersetzungen mit Curtius. Brugmanns Text schildert sein Leben bis zu der Litauen-Reise im Herbst 1880. Er beleuchtet also auch die kritische Phase in der Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft um 1876 und die personlichen Beziehungen der damals zumeist an der Leipziger Universitat lehrenden Protagonisten der Junggrammatiker. Dadurch ergibt sich ein authentischeres Bild von Brugmann, als dies bisher moglich war, und die seinerzeitige Entwicklung der Sprachwissenschaft lasst sich ausgewogener beurteilen. Angefugt sind Auszuge aus der Brugmannschen Familienchronik, die zwei langere Auslandsreisen sowie die Voranfrage wegen einer Berufung nach Baltimore betreffen. In den Texten erwahnte Fakten und Personen sind, wo notig, in Anmerkungen ausfuhrlich kommentiert. Als Einfuhrung ist ein Essay “Der ‘Junggrammatiker’ Karl Brugmann” vorangestellt.
