This biographical study of Anton Engelbrecht (1487-1556) discusses both his humanism and his criticism of the Church of Rome, as well as his resistance to the development of the Church in the Reformation and his defense of religious freedom. The book is based on extensive literary research and unpublished sources from various archives. It is historical material, the vast majority of which has not yet been used for historiography. In the Actes des sunderlichen sinodums die oberkeit belangend (1533), Engelbrecht put forward his defense of religious freedom. The appendix publishes the annotated full text for the first time.
