The central theme of this volume is the incipient social and cultural turn in biblical studies in the 1970s, which represents one of the most important innovations in the scholarly research of the Old and New Testaments in the 20th and beginning of the 21st century. The unilaterally narrowed focus which traditional exegesis placed on theological ideas and prominent individuals is deliberately widened. Biblical texts are interpreted in terms of their social, economic, political and cultural contexts through which they were characterized. The social-scientific interpretation of the Bible thus enables a deepened understanding of numerous biblical statements. The contributions demonstrate the efficiency of this methodology, whereby sociological and socio-historical as well as ethnological and cultural-anthropological avenues are presented. German text.
