The word “Coptic”, which is derived from the Greek word for Egypt, stands for the local Egyptians from a Greek perspective as opposed to the Greeks, Romans and Arabs who migrated into Egypt. The meaning of the word has encountered a certain degree of restriction through theology which exclusively refers to the Egyptians of Christian belief. Today, the term “Coptic” mainly refers to the language, i.e. the last language stage of the Egyptian language. Furthermore, recent research concentrates on the continuity of ancient Egyptian ideas and customs. This book is intended to be an introduction to Coptic culture: contributions on history, theology, literature, music, archaeology, and the history of science elucidate this largely unnoticed culture.
