From as early as the Greek Revolution (1821-1829) and especially after the arrival of the Greek Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias (1827), the newly established Greek state sought to it that essential and legal care was taken concerning antiquities. Therefore, the rescued surviving archives of the Archaeological Service form an official documentation of the will of the Greek State since the 19th century to protect and safeguard the monuments that the excavations would recover.

The book compiles articles based on the material from the Historical Archive of the Antiquities and Restorations presenting the full range of activities associated with the management of Greek archaeological sites and museums, as well as the history and the administrative development of the Archaeological Service. The presentation of the articles in this book is organized according to the colloquium’s oral presentations held in 2014.
