Principalement connu pour avoir reintroduit l’intentionnalite dans le repertoire des concepts fondamentaux de la philosophie, Franz Brentano a influence un des courants dominants de la philosophie contemporaine, la phenomenologie. Mais le maitre de Husserl est aussi a l’origine d’un veritable programme philosophique : il se fait le defenseur d’une reforme, voire d’une ” renaissance de la philosophie comme science “, dont les deux branches principales sont la metaphysique et la psychologie. Dans son ouvrage Psychologie d’un point de vue empirique (1874), il jette ainsi les bases d’une psychologie en continuite avec les sciences empiriques, pour en faire une science des phenomenes mentaux. Auteur prolifique, Brentano laisse derriere lui une oeuvre riche et diversifiee, et nombre de manuscrits dont seule une infime partie a ete publiee a ce jour.
