Transformation eines Konigs
Eine Analyse der Ausstattung von Tutanchamuns Mumie
by Fabienne Haas Dantes
The mummy decorations of Tutankhamun are the only secure finds on a royal mummy of the New Kingdom. The author examines them as a significant testimony to post-Amarna theological-cultic change and suggests the elusive afterlife concepts of this period. She reconstructs a material-based funerary ritual on the basis of the artifacts: the ritual acts were intended to achieve the fourteen central stages of transformation, the goal of which was the king’s posthumous becoming a god, and playful name-writing is used to place the king’s person in direct relation to the celestial stars sun and moon. The author also places the burials in the context of the history of religion and shows that after the reform of the Amarna period an effort matures to reinstate the underworld with all its important components and to expand it with new elements.
