Questo libro ripercorre la storia di Aquileia dal II sec. a.C. al VI sec. d.C., inquadrandola nella strategia di Roma per il controllo della regione danubiana e dei Balcani. A quei tempi, la citta era grande, popolosa, cosmopolita, e famosa per le fortificazioni e il porto. Era il centro di comando e controllo del sistema difensivo dell’estremo nord-est d’Italia. Subi sei assedi principali, l’ultimo dei quali le fu fatale. In seguito, rinacque, persistendo poi per oltre un secolo. La tradizione urbana del luogo riprese nel Medioevo. Dall’XI secolo alla meta del XVIII, un grande complesso basilicale, ornato con mosaici paleocristiani, fu sede di un principe-vescovo. Oggi la Basilica di Aquileia e la circostante area archeologica sono Patrimonio dell’Umanita UNESCO
