Im ersten okumenischen Konzil von Nicaea versammelte Kaiser Konstantin I. im Jahr 325 die Vertreter der Kirche. Uber 200 Bischofe, vor allem aus dem Ostteil des romischen Reiches, sollten die Lehreinheit der Kirche herstellen, die im arianischen Streit auseinanderzubrechen drohte. Konstantin, der 324 Alleinherrscher geworden war, wollte damit auch die Einheit seines Reiches sichern. Das Ergebnis des Konzils ist vor allem das nicaenische Glaubensbekenntnis, das 381 im zweiten okumenischen Konzil in Konstantinopel als Nicaeno-Constantinopolitanum zur Einheitsformel der Christenheit wurde, Bindung kirchlicher Gemeinschaft und Formel der Ausgrenzung abweichender Lehraussagen und ihrer Vertreter. 1700 Jahre nach Nicaea fragen wir nach der bleibenden Bedeutung des Bekenntnisses und nach der Bekenntnisbindung christlicher Kirchen heute.
