Easy language has become indispensable in the public sphere. Churches are also increasingly offering information and religious texts in easy language to enable people with disabilities or little knowledge of German to participate. However, translating Bible texts poses a particular challenge. The Psalms in particular, which attract attention with their highly figurative and poetic language, have features that at first glance contradict all the requirements of easy language. Sonja Hillebrand presents a way out of the dilemma between the demands of psalm poetry and the requirements of easy language. Using the transcreation method, psalms can be translated into easy language in a linguistically sound and theologically reflective way.
