Der erste Clemensbrief, ein Brief der romischen Gemeinde an die Gemeinde von Korinth, gegen Ende des ersten Jahrhunderts verfaat, ist der alteste Text des Urchristentums auaerhalb des Neuen Testaments. Seine Bedeutung fur das Verstandnis der Geschichte der Alten Kirche laat sich kaum hoch genug einschatzen, vor allem im Hinblick auf Fragen des christlichen Selbstverstandnisses, der Gemeindeverfassung und Amter, der Rezeption paulinischer Theologie, der Schriftinterpretation, aber auch auf Gestalt und Funktion der romischen Gemeinde als Vertreter des christlichen Glaubens in der Hauptstadt der damaligen Welt.Der Kommentar versucht – nach einer ausfuhrlichen Einleitung – anhand detaillierter Textanalyse, den Ersten Clemensbrief als wichtige Stimme des nachapostolischen Zeitalters gebuhrend zu wurdigen. Dazu wird die Forschungsgeschichte eingehend berucksichtigt. Exkurse zu den wichtigsten theologischen Fragen tragen dazu bei, den Standort des Briefes im Kontext der altchristlichen Literatur zu bestimmen.
