Mysterium Christi spiritualis praesentiae
Die Abendmahlslehre des Genfer Reformators Johannes Calvin aus romisch-katholischer Perspektive
by Frank Ewerszumrode
Frank Ewerszumrode analyzes Calvin’s Eucharistic doctrine from a Roman-Catholic point of view. The first part elaborates Calvin’s theology within the Reformation dispute on the Lord’s Supper. Calvin develops his own position by claiming that Christ’s presence is affected by the Holy Spirit. Calvin links this presence with bread and wine becoming instruments: They demonstrate the spiritual action and exhibit Christ’s body and blood at the same time. The second part comments on these results from a Roman-Catholic point of view. Despite Calvin’s rejection of the doctrine of transubstantiation, his theology is very close to his theology. It contains almost every intention expressed by the Roman-Catholic doctrine. Therefore Calvin is a voice which should not be neglected in the ecumenical dialogue.
