The word dedicace, which refers to the homage an author makes of his or her work to someone whose name is inscribed on the first page, comes from the Latindedicatio, meaning a ceremony in which an object is consecrated to a divinity. This volume investigates the practical and aesthetic implications of this etymology.

Si le terme est issu du latindedicatio, nous en avons cependant oublie le sens premier, celui de la ceremonie religieuse par laquelle on consacrait aux dieux une statue, un temple, un objet. Les articles reunis dans ce volume apportent un eclairage nouveau sur l'histoire de la dedicace latine, dans sa permanence et ses mutations, depuis l'Antiquite jusqu'a la Renaissance, et contribuent ainsi a lever une part de ce mystere sacre qui entoure la creation litteraire et la diffusion des livres.
