In Rome, the corpore quaestum facere (earning through the body) was seen as a notoriously filthy trade that led to the infamy of those who exercised it. Nevertheless, neither the Roman society nor the Attic – ever openly objected to this degrading profession. In fact, these societies accepted it as a socially beneficial component of everyday life, as it constituted, especially for the youth, a sexual outlet without jeopardizing the integrity of ingenuous and honest women, matrons, or virgins. Italian text.

English summary: In Rome, the corpore quaestum facere (earning through the body) was seen as a notoriously-filthy trade that led to infamy, of those who exercised it. Nevertheless, nor the Roman society – nor the Attic – ever openly object to this degrading profession. In fact, these societies accepted it as a socially-beneficial component of everyday life: as it constituted, especially for the youth, a sexual outlet, without jeopardizing the integrity of ingenuous and honest women, matrons or virgins.
