In his “Exhortation to the Reading of the Gospel”, Erasmus emphasizes that theologians, as well as laity, scholars, as well as the illiterate, can benefit from the reading of Scripture. In light of this, the Bible needs to be translated into the vernacular. Erasmus’ plea was well received in the sixteenth century and today this certainly seems more than obvious. Nevertheless, the humanist experienced great resistance to his writing at the time from conservative theologians. This book provides in the first place an introduction by Wim Francois to Erasmus’ pleas for Bible reading in the vernacular. It also gives the Latin text of the Exhortatio ad studium euangelicae, in an edition by Jean-Francois Cottier, and a contemporary Dutch translation by Wim Francois. The book also includes the text of a Middle Dutch version of the Exhortatio as it was possibly published in 1523 in Delft, by Cornelis Hendricsz Lettersnijder.
