Dies gilt auch und in besonderem Masse fur die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Dieses Buch prasentiert die Geschichte der zweiten deutschen Republik in ihren inter- und transnationalen Verflechtungen. Eine besondere Rolle spielte hierbei die Integration des westdeutschen Staates in die supranationalen europaischen Gemeinschaften seit 1950 in doppelter Hinsicht: Zum einen trieb die Bundesregierung diese Integration aktiv voran, zum anderen wurden die deutsche Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft in starkem Masse von den europaischen Strukturen gepragt. Im Zentrum der Darstellung stehen diese Prozesse der Europaisierung. Gleichwohl wird auch deutlich, dass von einem “Ende des Nationalstaates” keine Rede sein kann. Charakteristisch ist vielmehr eine Koexistenz von supranationalen Organisationen und Nationalstaat, wobei die Grenzen zwischen beiden immer wieder neu ausgehandelt werden.
