English summary: The authors of this book, a religious skeptic and a convinced Christian, believe that the time has come for an unprejudiced and open-minded reappraisal of the Gospels, based on the principle of exegetical benevolence and emanating from their history and a principle of naturalness that does not allow for violation of laws of nature. In contrast to Enlightenment theology of the 18th and 19th century they are not concerned with rational explanations for miracles, but instead with narrative archeology: the uncovering of information that lies buried under often strange Bible stories. Taking this approach, they both come to the conclusion that from the start of Jesus’ life he was cosseted by pious Jewish helpers who wanted to serve the Messiah and who remained alien to both the disciples and Christians. However they dissent in their conclusions. Becker views the origins and subsequent history of Christianity with distant skepticism, while Zimmermann sees in them the work of God. Doch in der Bewertung dissentieren sie. Becker betrachtet die Entstehung und die weitere Geschichte des Christentums mit distanzierter Skepsis, Zimmermann sieht darin das Wirken Gottes.
