Die viertgrosste Stadt Sachsens gehort zu den fruhen Zentren der Reformation. Wohlhabend geworden durch den Silberbergbau war Zwickau seinerzeit eines der bedeutendsten Wirtschafts- und Kulturzentren im Kurfurstentum Sachsen. Dies spiegelt sich noch heute in den zahlreichen Bau- und Kulturdenkmalen wider, wie z. B. den imposanten Kirchen. An der Marienkirche wirkten die Reformatoren Friedrich Myconius und Johann Wildenauer, genannt Egranus, aber auch der radikale Prediger Thomas Muntzer, der auf Empfehlung Luthers 1520/21 nach Zwickau kam. Bald behaupteten sich jedoch die gemassigten reformatorischen Krafte, worin sie von Luther in mehreren Predigten bestarkt wurden. Zwickau bietet aber noch weitere Kulturtraditionen. Als Geburtsstadt des romantischen Komponisten Robert Schumann hat es einen guten Klang nicht nur in der Welt der Musik. Automobilfreunde kommen bei den Namen Horch und Sachsenring ins Schwarmen, Kenner der Architektur schatzen den reichen Bestand an Jugendstil- und Grunderzeit-Bauten.
