Review - French Ce livre trace la genese theorique de l'Etat social depuis la philosophie de Hobbes jusqu'aux penseurs solidaristes. A partir de l'installation du theme de l'individualisme possessif qui, au XVIIsiecle, participe a l'autonomisation du droit de propriete, notamment sous la plume de John Locke, s'est aussi constitue, a la faveur de son renversement, le theme d'une propriete subordonnee a des considerations civiques - chez Jean-Jacques Rousseau notamment. Dans ce sillage, l'Etat social qui nait a la fin du XIXsiecle, en exigeant que l'individu honore sa dette envers la societe en payant pour des services publics, est l'expression d'une alternative possible a l'atomisation d'une societe faconnee par la propriete privee.
