Um 1800 war Wien mit ca. 270.000 Einwohnern die einzige deutschsprachige Grossstadt, die sich in ihrer Internationalitat, aber auch in ihrer sozialen Differenziertheit mit den Metropolen London und Paris messen konnte. Die lange Zeit einseitig auf das preussisch-kleindeutsche Paradigma zugeschnittene Kulturgeschichtsschreibung wurde dem regen kulturellen Leben Wiens dieser Zeit nicht gerecht. Das hier vorgelegte Buch macht sich zur Aufgabe, diese fruchtbare und folgenreiche Phase der Wiener Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte erstmals aus interdisziplinarer Perspektive aufzuarbeiten. Neben der urbanen Musik-, Kunst-, Literatur- und Theaterpraxis werden auch alltagspraktische Kulturformen wie das Broschuren- und Zeitschriftenwesen sowie andere Formen popularer Wissensvermittlung in den Blick genommen.
