In einer demokratischen Gesellschaft ist die offene Auseinandersetzung um die Bedingungen menschenwurdigen Sterbens und um die Frage der Zulassigkeit von Sterbehilfe notwendig. Expertinnen und Experten aus Medizin und Krankenpflege, Rechtsphilosophie und Strafrecht, Theologischer Ethik und Politik, Psychologie und Seelsorge setzen sich u.a. mit den folgenden Fragen auseinander: Worum geht es in der Debatte um die Sterbehilfe eigentlich? Wann wird Lebensverlangerung zur Leidensverlangerung? Steht hinter dem Wunsch Betroffener und ihrer Angehorigen nach Hilfe zum Sterben nicht meist der Wunsch nach Hilfe im Sterben, nach umfassender schmerzlindernder Medizin und Pflege, psychosozialer und uberhaupt menschlicher Begleitung? Wer setzt so oder so die Massstabe dafur, was im Einzelfall zu tun oder zu unterlassen ist? Durfen wir uns zum Herrn uber Leben und Tod aufspielen? Ist eine Neuregelung der Sterbehilfe im Strafgesetzbuch sinnvoll? Wie sind Patientenrechte zu starken?
