Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is the classic figure in German literature. As such, he not only determined the image and the notion of German Classicism, but also repeatedly prompted critical debate about his work and his person in literature and art. The papers in this volume address both of these aspects: on the one hand, they focus on Goethe’s influence on his contemporaries as well as on later recipients of his work, thereby especially taking into account lesser known paths of reception, and on the other hand on the different views of the concept of classic and of classicism in philology, philosophy and art history during the 19th and 20th centuries. German text.
English summary: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is the classic figure in German literature.
