This volume brings together two studies of Fremdvolkerdarstellungen (representations of foreign peoples) on the plinths or ‘soubassements’ of Greco-Roman temples. Holger Kockelmann discusses seven Greco-Roman Fremdvolkerlisten (lists of foreign peoples) from Kom Ombo, Komir, Esna and Xois. The author presents these lists together with commentary on their content and structure, as well as on their possible dependence on older drafts. Particular attention is paid to the contextualization of the lists within the overall temple decoration and to their role within the context of religious practice. Alexa Rickert presents a study on processions in Nubian cities and regions which have only survived in the form of two versions in the Temple of Isis at Philae. In addition to transliteration, translation and commentary, the study also includes a new transcription of the procession texts from Room I in the Temple of Isis.

German description: Der vorliegende Band vereint zwei Untersuchungen von Fremdvolkerdarstellungen im Soubassement der griechisch-romischen Tempel. Holger Kockelmann bespricht sieben griechisch-romische Fremdvolkerlisten aus Kom Ombo, Komir, Esna und Xois. Streng genommen handelt es sich nicht um reine Volkerlisten, sondern um ein heterogenes Konglomerat aus echten Toponymen und abwertenden Feindbezeichnungen, zu welchen insbesondere eine bisher unerkannte Parallele zur beruhmten Auflistung der Namen des Gotterfeindes Apophis im Papyrus Bremner-Rhind gehort. Der Autor prasentiert das Listenmaterial mit einem Kommentar zu Inhalt und Struktur sowie zur moglichen Abhangigkeit von alteren Vorlagen. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Einbindung der Listen in die ubergeordnete Tempeldekoration und auf ihrer Rolle im Kultkontext des Heiligtums: Wie die Beispiele in Kom Ombo und Esna erkennen lassen, waren sie Ziel eines im Tempel durchgefuhrten Feindvernichtungsrituals. Alexa Rickert legt eine Bearbeitung der Prozessionen nubischer Stadte und Regionen vor, die in nur zwei Versionen im Isistempel von Philae erhalten sind. Ein Hauptcharakteristikum dieses Typus ist die Kombination von personifizierten nubischen Ortsnamen mit begehrten Rohstoffen wie Mineralien, Ebenholz oder Elfenbein, die verschiedenen Gottheiten als Opfer dargebracht wurden. Die Autorin geht der Frage nach, inwiefern die Aufzahlung der Materialien sowie ihre Kombination mit Ortschaften die okonomische und historische Realitat zur Entstehungszeit der Quellen widerspiegeln. Neben Transliteration, Ubersetzung und Textkommentar enthalt die Untersuchung auch eine neue Abschrift der Prozessionstexte aus Raum I des Isistempels.
