Am Beginn der sogenannten Moderne steht nicht die Trennung, sondern ein weiterhin enges Verhältnis von Religion und Naturwissenschaften.
Gegen die fruhere Auffassung, mit der sogenannten Aufklarung des 18. Jahrhunderts sei die Sakularisierung von Kultur, Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft verbunden gewesen, belegen die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes nicht die Trennung, sondern Neubestimmungen des weiterhin engen Verhaltnisses von Religion und den entstehenden Naturwissenschaften im langen 18. Jahrhundert. Dabei geraten die Transformationen der bisher die Geschichtsschreibung dominierenden alteren “Physikotheologie” in den Blick. Deren mechanistische und rationalistische Akzentuierungen waren insbesondere mit der theologischen Philosophie der Leibniz-Wolffschen Schule verbunden gewesen und haben bestimmte Weisheits- und Vernunftsvorstellungen auf einen gottlichen Heilsplan fur die gesamte Natur ubertragen. Im spateren 18. Jahrhundert wurden diese Vorstellungen zunehmend durch hermetische, theosophische und schliesslich um “okkulte” Krafte angereicherte vitalistische Modelle erganzt, die die Geschichtsschreibung der modernen Naturwissenschaften nicht selten als esoterisch oder pseudowissenschaftlich charakterisiert und teilweise komplett ausgeblendet hat. In den Fokus geraten nun die theologischen und in einem weiteren, facherubergreifenden Sinne religiosen Implikationen unter anderem einer Physikotheologie als Frommigkeitsform und Sammlungskonzept, des Mesmerismus, eines “aufgeklarten Vitalismus” (P.H. Reill) und der sogenannten romantischen Naturphilosophie. Dadurch werden interdisziplinar die Praktiken der Physikotheologie sowie die theosophischen, spaterhin manchmal als esoterisch bezeichneten Seiten der sogenannten Aufklarung sichtbar gemacht. Die altere These, mit der Aufklarung und insbesondere durch Kants Kritik des physikotheologischen Gottesbeweises sei die Physikotheologie als solche obsolet geworden und die Naturwissenschaften hatten sich von der Theologie/Religion emanzipiert, erweist sich als eine unzutreffende Behauptung, die im Zusammenhang mit der inzwischen ebenfalls als unzutreffend erkannten Sakularisierungstheorie aufgestellt worden ist.
