Incarnazione venne fondato a Roma nel 1639 da papa Urbano VIII Barberini per accogliere soprattutto le donne appartenenti alla sua famiglia destinate a prendere i voti o rimaste vedove: divenne percio noto tra la popolazione romana come la comunita delle “barberine”.Il Diario qui pubblicato, scritto da piu mani, costituisce un notevole esempio di cronaca monastica e narra gli eventi accaduti all’interno delle mura claustrali a partire dalla fondazione fino al 1781. Esso registra gli ingressi in clausura e gli avvenimenti principali della vita conventuale e delinea anche un articolato ritratto del ruolo non solo spirituale e devozionale ma pure politico e sociale svolto da una comunita tra le piu ricche e ricercate dalla nobilta cittadina.
