“En ecrivant ce livre, il est naturel que nous ayons pense avant tout aux etudiants et aux professeurs etrangers desireux de bien connaitre notre langue. Cependant ce n’est pas le seul but que nous nous soyons propose. C’est le trait commun de tous les manuels de prononciation de passer sous silence une multitude de problemes sur lesquels chacun de nous aimerait a l’occasion etre renseigne. Dans ce traite, nous avons tache au contraire d’etre le plus complet possible. Nous avons litteralement “fouille” la langue et nous ne nous sommes cache aucune difficulte. Il n’y a pas si longtemps encore, il nous suffisait de connaitre et de pratiquer, a quelques exceptions pres, le lexique de notre langue. Mais les temps ont change ! Pour diverses raisons que tout le monde connait, c’est depuis le debut du siecle un va-et-vient continuel de mots et surtout de noms propres d’un pays a l’autre. Les Francais se trouvent donc amenes a chaque instant, soit au cours d’une conversation, soit au cours d’une lecture, d’une conference ou d’un discours, a prononcer tel ou tel mot, tel ou tel nom propre anglais, allemand, espagnol, italien, etc. Qu’il y ait la pour eux une source de difficultes, on ne saurait le nier en entendant les fautes, parfois grossieres, que certains commettent. Le mal n’est pas grand lorsqu’il s’agit d’une conversation privee. Il l’est davantage lorsqu’on parle en public ou devant le micro. Nous avons donc pense qu’il serait egalement utile de donner quelques indications a ce sujet.”
