Aus Anlass des zenjahrigen Jubilaums des Museums Judengasse haben das Archaologische Museum und das Judische Museum im Dezember 2002 der ersten Kongress zur judischen Archaologie im deutschsprachigen Raum veranstaltet. Vorgestellt und diskutiert wurden dabei fast alle namhaften archaologischen Projekte der letzten Jahre. Ziel war es, zu einer ersten Synthese der vielen Einzelergebnisse zu gelangen und damit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Erforschung judischen Lebens in Deutschland zu leisten. Der vorliegende Tagungsband besteht aus einem ersten Teil, in dem von Michael Toch, Ole Harck, Annette Weber und Simon Paulus zentrale Ubersichtsthemen behandelt werden, und einem zweiten Teil mit Beitragen , die Funde und Befunde in einzelnen Orten vorlegen.
