Das Christentum wird meist als eine Religion der ‘Lebensbejahung’ prasentiert. In ihrer formativen Fruhphase war die christliche Theologie jedoch massiv von manichaisch-weltablehnenden Ideen beeinflusst, die in deutlichem Kontrast zum in der mosaischen Tradition durchaus vorhandenen ‘Schopfungslob’ standen. Dieser Widerspruch pragte das Menschenbild der katholischen Kirche, auch deren Umgang mit Emotionalitat und Gesundheit. Als Reaktion auf die Herausforderung der Reformation kam es im Katholizismus zu einer ‘inneren Mission’ zur Propagierung von Askese und Disziplin aller ‘Glaubigen’. Die ‘katholische Reform’ betrieb dabei die Ausweitung der im Monchtum schon lange elaborierten Postulate einer rigorosen Seelenfuhrung – als engmaschige ‘pastorale’ Lenkung durch Obere einerseits, als permanente Selbstkontrolle des ‘Frommen’ andererseits. Die Forderung nach strikter Affektregulation nahm einen zentralen Stellenwert ein. Dies hatte weitreichende Folgen auch fur die vom Klerus propagierten Vorstellungen von seelischer und leiblicher Gesundheit. Carlos Watzka erortert die Ausgestaltung eines solchen geistlichen Diskurses der Diatetik der Affekte fur den bayrisch-osterreichischen Raum vom fruhen 16. bis zum spaten 18. Jahrhundert.
