This volume takes a diachronic approach to the historical, architectural and decorative development of the Oratorian church of Saints Nereus and Achilleus, examining its transformations over the centuries, from its early Christian origins to the most recent restoration work.

Built on ancient foundations, at the site of the so-called ‘titulus Fasciolae’, the building was altered and adorned with a mosaic in the 9th century by Pope Leo III, and underwent further alterations during the Middle Ages. In the second half of the fifteenth century, new restoration work sponsored by Pope Sixtus IV affected its structures, whilst towards the end of the sixteenth century – amidst a movement to revive early Christian and medieval traditions – the church was the focus of particular attention from Cardinal Cesare Baronio. The historian from Sora restored the building, giving it an ‘ancient-style’ liturgical layout using artefacts of various ages and origins, and commissioned artists of diverse backgrounds and skill levels to create the two altarpieces (Durante Alberti and Cristoforo Roncalli) and the extensive pictorial decorations (Girolamo Massei, il Trometta, Pietro Cesarei, Prospero Orsi, Ferdinando Sermei, Camillo Spallucci and Vespasiano Strada), including the well-known cycle of frescoes dedicated to the martyrdom of the apostles in the side aisles, attributed to Domenico Cerroni of Arpino.

Enriched by up-to-date research and a wealth of illustrative material, the book concludes with an analysis focusing on the most recent period, examining the role of the Oratorians and also providing an overview of modern conservation work, with a view to offering a comprehensive overview of the complex events that have shaped the history of a monument in which historical layers, artistic expressions and spiritual journeys are interwoven.
