Was hat sich “rund um den Tod” verandert, als die romische Welt christlich wurde? Dieser Frage geht das Buch unter drei Perspektiven nach. Zunachst stehen die Friedhofe im Fokus: Wie hat sich ihre Gestaltung gewandelt? Welche Bilder und Zeichen markieren die Graber? Was steht in den Inschriften? Was hat man beim Grabbesuch gemacht? Danach wandert der Blick auf die fruhchristliche Literatur: Welche Jenseitsorte werden beschrieben? Was geschieht dort? Wie kommen die Verstorbenen vor? Und schliealich werden die Zwecke erortert, die die Jenseitsvorstellungen und damit verbundene Praktiken erfullten. Dabei kommen pastorale, aber auch politische und soziale Funktionen in den Blick. Das Buch bietet ein facettenreiches und exemplarisches Bild der spatantiken Transformationen rund um den Tod, die bis heute die europaische Kultur pragen.
