1902 veroffentlichte William James (1842-1910) sein Buch “The Varieties of Religious Experience. A Study on Human Nature”; bereits 1907 erschien die erste deutsche Ubersetzung. Inzwischen kann man sagen, dass dieses Werk fur die Religionsphilosophie eine ahnliche Bedeutung besitzt wie Schleiermachers Reden “Uber die Religion” (1799). Konsequent fragt James danach, wie man unter Bedingungen der Moderne uberhaupt noch religiose Erfahrungen machen kann und welche Relevanz diese fur unser Leben besitzen. Dadurch ergeben sich spannende Vergleichsmoglichkeiten mit anderen Klassikern wie Wittgenstein und Kant, aber auch mit aktuellen Ansatzen zur Rehabilitierung des Heiligen bzw. zur Begrundung einer Neurotheologie. Der Sammelband beruht auf einem Symposium, das im Rahmen der Reihe “Junge Religionsphilosophie” gemeinsam von der Katholischen Akademie Berlin und dem Forschungsinstitut fur Philosophie Hannover veranstaltet wurde.
