This study posits that piety and spirituality in Switzerland are expressed in four major areas: “institutional,” which is traditional and free church Christian; “alternative,” which includes esotericism and spiritual healing; “secular,” which is indifferent or opposed to religion; and the vast majority of “distanced,” which includes vague notions of spirituality and those who acknowledge the significance of religion only in certain circumstances.
