Ce livre cherche a comprendre le statut paradoxal du concept d’acte de parole (representation et action?) en le situant par rapport aux grands debats de la philosophie du langage. Il s’agit de comprendre en quoi et a quels titres le langage, qui parle du monde, peut etre considere comme une activite. Sont examines en particulier ses aspects signifiants et referentiels, ses aspects performatifs et ses aspects rhetoriques. Se concentrant sur l’efficacite normative de l’acte illocutoire qui regle les echanges discursifs, on cherche a en comprendre la specificite – son statut quasi-juridique -, les differentes modalites, et le fonctionnement. Une question centrale est de savoir si l’efficacite illocutoire derive de la semantique des enonces, des intentions des locuteurs ou de conventions qui reglent l’usage du langage. Est defendue dans l’ouvrage une conception conventionnaliste et contextualiste des actes de parole, qui releve les multiples conditions permettant, ou non, a la parole de chacun d’avoir une quelconque efficacite, ne serait-ce qu’en voulant dire la verite a propos du monde.
