Faire de la civilisation un ideal normatif universel a favorise les pires derives, au point de presenter paradoxalement la colonisation comme le fardeau de l’homme blanc (R. Kipling). A l’inverse, defendre un relativisme irreductible des civilisations revient a considerer leur affrontement comme fatal (S. Huntington). La diversite des civilisations revele plutot un phenomene a la fois de diffraction creatrice et de refraction synthetique de traits anthropologiques communs. Chaque civilisation doit son originalite a la mise en forme symbolique d’une experience de vie partagee par une multitude d’hommes susceptibles d’eprouver ensemble–jusqu’a un certain seuil–le sentiment d’une identite differenciee du genre humain.
