This volume gives a mathematical commentary on tables A3-A13 published in vol. 2a. These tables concern the mean Sun and Moon, their equations, the tables of parallax and tables required for the calculation of eclipses. Ptolemy’s Manual of the Handy Tables, as well as the lengthy commentaries of Theon of Alexandria are consulted throughout. These tables are here recalculated according to the principles and fundamental constants defined in the Almagest, which was composed at an earlier date. While the epochs of the mean motions of the Handy Tables and the Almagest differ, an analysis shows that the theory of the Sun in each case is identical to that of Hipparchus. The study of the equations of Sun and Moon shows that the Handy Tables follows the Almagest in principle, but that the tabulation of the equations is expressed with greater precision in the Handy Tables. The table A13 which gives the components required for the calculation of a solar eclipse is fully analysed as well as the projection to the horizon given by the prosneusis (inclination). The lunar and solar eclipses of the year 364, chosen by Theon for detailed calculations, are reviewed here, along with fresh recalculations.
